Sikkim travel FAQs
Straight answers about permits, seasons, costs, altitude and getting around. For place-specific questions, each destination and tour page has its own FAQs.
How many days are enough for Sikkim?
Five to seven nights covers Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and one of the northern valleys (Lachung or Lachen) at a comfortable pace. Add two nights for Pelling in the west, and two or three more if you want Darjeeling as well. Three nights is enough for a Gangtok-only short break.
What is the best time to visit Sikkim?
October and November give the clearest mountain views and dry roads. March to May brings rhododendrons and flowering valleys at Yumthang and Barsey. December to February is cold with the best chance of snow at Tsomgo and Lachung. June to September is monsoon season, with landslides that can close roads for hours or days.
Do Indians need a permit to visit Sikkim?
Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Sikkim or visit Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla or Namchi. You do need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Gurudongmar) and the Zuluk Silk Route. These are issued through registered tour operators. Sikkim also charges a ₹50 per-tourist fee, collected by your hotel.
Can foreign nationals visit Sikkim?
Yes. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, valid 30 days. Since January 2026 it is issued online only through the e-FRRO portal, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Tsomgo, Yumthang, Zero Point and the Dzongri trek need an extra Protected Area Permit for groups of two or more. Nathula, Gurudongmar and Zuluk are closed to foreigners.
How do I reach Sikkim?
Most travellers fly into Bagdogra (IXB) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), both near Siliguri. From there Gangtok is about 125 km, a 4 to 5 hour drive along the Teesta. Pakyong airport near Gangtok has had no scheduled flights since June 2024, and the Sevoke–Rangpo railway is not due before late 2027.
Is North Sikkim open right now?
North Sikkim roads to Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar and Zero Point have been disrupted several times since the October 2023 Teesta flood and later landslides. Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point reopened in September 2025; Lachen and Gurudongmar reopened in September 2026 after a second closure. Vehicles must now cross Toong check post by 4 pm. We check the status before confirming any North Sikkim trip.
How much does a Sikkim trip cost?
A 5-night trip with standard hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a private car typically starts from about ₹18,000 to ₹28,000 per person for two people sharing. Premium hotels, peak dates, solo travel and North Sikkim add to the cost. Use our cost estimator for a quick range, then ask us for an exact quote.
Is Sikkim safe for families and senior citizens?
Yes. Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla, Namchi and Darjeeling all sit between 1,300 m and 2,200 m and are comfortable for most people. High points like Tsomgo (3,753 m), Nathula (4,310 m) and Gurudongmar (5,183 m) are short visits; people with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor before going that high.
Can you combine Darjeeling with Sikkim?
Yes, and it is one of the most popular routes. Darjeeling is about 100 km (3.5 to 4.5 hours) from Gangtok and a similar distance from Pelling. A 7-night Gangtok, Pelling and Darjeeling loop, or 5 nights split between Darjeeling and Gangtok, works well from Bagdogra or NJP.
Do I need to book a Sikkim trip in advance?
For May, October and the Christmas to New Year period, book four to eight weeks ahead; good hotels in Gangtok, Pelling and Lachung fill early. Outside those windows two to three weeks is usually enough. Permits are applied for one to two days before each excursion once you are in Gangtok.
What vehicle will we travel in?
Couples and small families usually travel in a hatchback or sedan within Gangtok and South and West Sikkim. For North Sikkim, the Silk Route and larger groups we use SUVs such as the Innova, Xylo or Scorpio. Sikkim registered vehicles are required for some routes, including North Sikkim.
Is there mobile network in Sikkim?
Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla, Namchi and Darjeeling have good 4G. Coverage becomes patchy in Lachen, Lachung, Zuluk and on treks, and can drop out completely at Gurudongmar and Zero Point. BSNL and Jio tend to work best in remote areas. Foreign SIM cards will not work as a primary number for permits.
Are ATMs and card payments available?
Gangtok, Darjeeling, Namchi and Pelling have ATMs and most hotels accept cards and UPI. In Lachung, Lachen, Zuluk and villages, carry cash; ATMs are few and often empty. Shops in Gangtok’s MG Marg take UPI widely.
What is the cancellation policy?
It depends on how close to travel you cancel and on hotel policies, which we list in your quote. If a road or permit closure stops part of a trip, we reroute or refund the unused local services where the supplier allows. See our booking terms for details.
Can you arrange trips for groups and offsites?
Yes. We plan school groups, family reunions and company offsites of 10 to 60 people, with tempo travellers or small coaches where roads allow, conference-friendly hotels in Gangtok and Darjeeling, and permit handling for the whole group.
Is Sikkim plastic-free?
Sikkim has banned many single-use plastics, and some areas restrict packaged drinking water bottles. Carry a refillable bottle; most hotels offer filtered water. Littering at lakes and high passes can bring fines, so bring a small bag for your waste.
Can I see snow in Sikkim?
Snow is most likely from December to March at Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, Zero Point and around Lachung and Lachen. In April and early May you can still find snow at Zero Point and Gurudongmar. Fresh snowfall sometimes closes these roads for a day or two.
Do you offer helicopter transfers?
Helicopter services between Bagdogra and Gangtok have run at different times, with limited seats and frequent weather cancellations. We can check the current schedule for your dates, but we always plan a road transfer as the backup.
