Know your altitude
From 120 m to 5,183 m in one trip
Where you sleep matters more than where you visit. Most stays sit below 2,800 m; the high lakes and passes are day visits. Every itinerary shows its altitude day by day.

How many days are enough for Sikkim?
Five to seven nights covers Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and one of the northern valleys (Lachung or Lachen) at a comfortable pace. Add two nights for Pelling in the west, and two or three more if you want Darjeeling as well. Three nights is enough for a Gangtok-only short break.
What is the best time to visit Sikkim?
October and November give the clearest mountain views and dry roads. March to May brings rhododendrons and flowering valleys at Yumthang and Barsey. December to February is cold with the best chance of snow at Tsomgo and Lachung. June to September is monsoon season, with landslides that can close roads for hours or days.
Do Indians need a permit to visit Sikkim?
Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Sikkim or visit Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla or Namchi. You do need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Gurudongmar) and the Zuluk Silk Route. These are issued through registered tour operators. Sikkim also charges a ₹50 per-tourist fee, collected by your hotel.
Can foreign nationals visit Sikkim?
Yes. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, valid 30 days. Since January 2026 it is issued online only through the e-FRRO portal, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Tsomgo, Yumthang, Zero Point and the Dzongri trek need an extra Protected Area Permit for groups of two or more. Nathula, Gurudongmar and Zuluk are closed to foreigners.
How do I reach Sikkim?
Most travellers fly into Bagdogra (IXB) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), both near Siliguri. From there Gangtok is about 125 km, a 4 to 5 hour drive along the Teesta. Pakyong airport near Gangtok has had no scheduled flights since June 2024, and the Sevoke–Rangpo railway is not due before late 2027.
Is North Sikkim open right now?
North Sikkim roads to Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar and Zero Point have been disrupted several times since the October 2023 Teesta flood and later landslides. Lachung, Yumthang and Zero Point reopened in September 2025; Lachen and Gurudongmar reopened in September 2026 after a second closure. Vehicles must now cross Toong check post by 4 pm. We check the status before confirming any North Sikkim trip.
How much does a Sikkim trip cost?
A 5-night trip with standard hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a private car typically starts from about ₹18,000 to ₹28,000 per person for two people sharing. Premium hotels, peak dates, solo travel and North Sikkim add to the cost. Use our cost estimator for a quick range, then ask us for an exact quote.
Is Sikkim safe for families and senior citizens?
Yes. Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla, Namchi and Darjeeling all sit between 1,300 m and 2,200 m and are comfortable for most people. High points like Tsomgo (3,753 m), Nathula (4,310 m) and Gurudongmar (5,183 m) are short visits; people with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor before going that high.
Can you combine Darjeeling with Sikkim?
Yes, and it is one of the most popular routes. Darjeeling is about 100 km (3.5 to 4.5 hours) from Gangtok and a similar distance from Pelling. A 7-night Gangtok, Pelling and Darjeeling loop, or 5 nights split between Darjeeling and Gangtok, works well from Bagdogra or NJP.
